Do you know the difference between intrauterine insemination and in vitro fertilization? Assisted reproduction consists of a set of medical treatments, whose purpose is to achieve pregnancy in the event of a fertility problem; male or female, techniques such as Artificial Insemination (AI) or In Vitro Fertilization (IVF), are the best known and most effective.
This is a reproductive treatment that consists of introducing a semen sample either from the couple or from a donor into the woman’s uterus; this type of fertilization takes place “in vivo”, that is, inside the woman; it is a much simpler technique because there is no egg extraction but ovarian stimulation must be controlled, otherwise a multiple pregnancy is achieved; it is a cheaper technique and the success rate of AI is not exact, as it varies depending on each case, the patient’s age, etc.
On the other hand, In Vitro Fertilization or IVF, is a very different technique to the previous one because the fertilization of the gametes is carried out in a reproduction laboratory. In this treatment, the woman’s eggs are extracted and fertilized in the laboratory in order to introduce the embryos obtained into the uterus, in this case the success rate is much higher than in AI.
As the name suggests, this technique involves in vitro fertilization, i.e. outside the woman. It is much more complex as it is necessary to perform a surgical intervention in which the eggs are obtained and then fertilized in the laboratory.
In this ovarian stimulation we aim to obtain a number of eggs between 6 and 15. This procedure is a little more expensive than AI, but with a higher chance of success in some cases up to 60%.
