Endometriosis is a disease in which a tissue that must cover the inside of the uterus grows on the outside, this affects the ovaries, fallopian tubes and tissue that lines the pelvis, sometimes it can be found in other organs, such as intestines and bladder.

Endometriosis reacts to the hormones of the ovaries and acts as it normally would, thicken, break down and bleed during each cycle, but get trapped.

Common signs of endometriosis

One of its symptoms is intense pain that occurs during menstrual periods, and bleeding may be heavy or appear between periods. You also have pain during or after sexual intercourse and bowel movements.

This disease can be inherited, in case your mother or sisters have this disease, the chances that you also suffer from it are increased, so they can resort to tests and exams such as a transvaginal ultrasound or magnetic resonance imaging.

Did you know that endometriosis is one of the most common causes of infertility?

 Fertility problems caused by endometriosis

  • Pelvic adhesions. The fallopian tubes and ovaries can adhere to surfaces that prevent them from performing the functions correctly.
  • Causes a low ovarian reserve. The lesions that occur alter the quality of the ovules and the number of ovarian follicles.
  • Scars on the fallopian tubes. This can damage or block them, preventing the path of the ovum to the uterus.

Endometriosis treatment

To begin with a treatment one must consider the age, the severity of the symptoms and whether it is planned to have children in the future. Some options may be:

  • Analgesics. Over-the-counter or prescription, they are for treating colic and mild pain.
  • Hormone therapy. Taking birth control pills, progesterone injections or medications that prevent estrogen from occurring, prevent it from getting worse.
  • Surgery. It is usually done to remove tumors and remove scar tissue.

Women who suffer from endometriosis and want to be mothers should resort to a fertility clinic to start with the most appropriate treatment, which is usually In Vitro Fertilization (IVF). At Advanced Fertility Center Cancun our doctors will give you the necessary guidance so you can fulfill your dream of being a mother.
