What is gender selection?

This is a process that allows the mother and father of an unborn baby to choose whether they want to have a girl or a boy. This is a procedure that is performed during In Vitro Fertilization fertility treatment.

How does it work?

The PGT-A or PGS (Preimplantation Genetic Test) test allows the analysis of the chromosomes of an embryo. It is useful to identify if the baby has an abnormality in her chromosomes, which can cause a syndrome. However, this test is also used to find out the sex chromosomes of the embryo, if it has XX or XY; that is to say girl or boy respectively.

During In Vitro Fertilization, the patient’s eggs are obtained so that they are fertilized outside the uterus with the patient’s or a donor’s sperm. Once they are fertilized, the embryonic development will be observed and a genetic analysis can be carried out on those embryos that are in the best condition.

At this point mom and dad will be able to choose if they want to have a girl or a boy. Subsequently, the selected embryo will be implanted inside the patient’s uterus so that it begins its gestational development and can become a baby.
