How does egg donation work? Egg donation is a medical procedure in which a woman donates her eggs to be used by another woman who is having trouble conceiving. This procedure may be an option for women who are unable to produce viable eggs or for those who have a genetic risk of passing on a disease to their children.
The egg donation process begins with a medical evaluation of the potential donor to ensure that she is healthy and eligible to be a donor. This may include physical exams, blood tests and genetic testing.
Once the donor is determined to be eligible, a process of ovarian stimulation is initiated to increase egg production. This may involve the administration of hormones and careful monitoring of hormone levels and egg growth.
When the eggs are mature enough, they’re removed by a procedure called follicular aspiration. This procedure is performed under anesthesia and usually takes about 30 minutes. A needle is used to extract the eggs from the follicles in the donor’s ovaries.
The extracted eggs are then transferred to the recipient woman, who undergoes a process of in vitro fertilization (IVF). IVF involves the fertilization of the eggs by donor sperm in a laboratory. The embryos are then cultured in a controlled environment and the best one is selected for transfer to the recipient’s uterus.
If the procedure is successful, the embryo is implanted in the recipient woman’s uterus and the pregnancy begins. The donor has no responsibility or legal link to the child resulting from the egg donation.
