It is an anatomical and functional structure that forms padre of the ovary. The oocyte is the cell that can be formed and maturing, in a microscopic part of the inner wall of a follicle along the natural or stimulated ovarian cycle.
The Empty Follicle Syndrome happens when eggs couldn’t be recovered during the follicular puncture, despite that there was a development of several follicles. This happens in a small percentage of the patients. Its incidence fluctuates around 0.5 and 0.7%, being more frequent in cycles with gonadotropin-releasing hormone analogues.
It is a procedure where follicles are aspirated to extract mature eggs and use them for fertility treatment.
In those patients that present EFS the egg could get off the follicles wall, and it won’t be recovered.
There are 2 types of EFS, true and false.
The incapacity of recovering oocytes from mature follicles after an induction, follicular development and apparently normal steroidogenesis.
It’s due to mistakes in the administration of hCG or pharmacokinetics reasons. (expired cHg or with decreased bioavailability). It also can relate to a premature ovulation or lack of maturity.
