Assisted reproduction after 45 has become a great option for women and couples who wish to have a baby, even after their most fertile years have passed.
The decision to start a family is deeply personal and unique to every couple. In many cases, it comes after achieving personal, academic, or professional goals. However, when the desire to become parents arises after the age of 40 or 45, many face the challenge of trying to conceive during a stage when fertility naturally declines.
As time passes, female fertility naturally declines. This decline becomes more significant after age 35 and even more noticeable after 40. Women are born with a finite number of eggs, and with age, both the quantity and quality of these eggs decrease, making it harder to conceive and increasing the risk of genetic abnormalities.
In men, although sperm production continues for longer, age-related changes can also affect sperm quality, including reduced motility and increased DNA damage.
Despite these challenges, it’s important to emphasize that having a baby after 45 is not impossible—especially thanks to advances in fertility treatments and assisted reproduction.
This is one of the most commonly recommended treatments for couples over 40. It involves fertilizing the egg with sperm in a laboratory and transferring the resulting embryo to the uterus. For women over 45, donor eggs are often recommended, since ovarian reserve tends to be very low and available eggs may not be viable.
In some cases, if the woman still has a good ovarian reserve, IVF with her own eggs may be attempted. However, this is assessed on a case-by-case basis through preliminary tests.
This is an increasingly common option for older women. Eggs from a young donor are fertilized with sperm from the partner or a donor, and the embryo is transferred to the patient’s uterus. This significantly improves success rates.
Some couples choose to adopt previously fertilized embryos, either their own or from other couples who have chosen to donate them after fertility treatments.
Although conceiving at an advanced age can present challenges, there are multiple options available to achieve a successful pregnancy. The most important steps are to undergo a timely medical evaluation, make informed decisions, and work with specialists who offer personalized treatment.
