Is it possible to do a gender selection in embryos during a fertility treatment? Thanks to the technology that we have, it is possible. A whole process to achieve this exists, and we are going to share it with you.
Although it isn’t possible to change the embryos gender it is possible to identify it with the PGT-A test. When our patients are going through an In Vitro Fertilization or any other similar treatment, eggs are extracted from the patient and are fertilized outside the uterus.
When the embryos are obtained, a PGT-A test can be done to analyze its condition. Also the embryos gender can be identified, if the patients wish to, they can choose if they have a girl or a boy.
We invite you to read our blog entry: How long does In Vitro Fertilization last? We think it might be from your interest.
The PGT-A or Preimplantation genetic testing for aneuploidy allows us to identify the possible alterations that can be found in the embryos chromosomes. Each embryo must have 46 chromosomes in total; 23 pairs coming from the mother and father.
22 of these pairs of chromosomes are called somatics and the last pair is the sexual one. When the chromosomes are XX it is female and if it’s XY it is male.
Those embryos that do not have the correct amount of chromosomes are called “aneuploidy”. Having less or more chromosomes than normal generates a pathology in the embryo, for example some type of syndrome.
