October is the month of the fight against breast cancer. The objective is to create awareness about this type of cancer, which represents one of the main causes of death in women in Mexico. Next we want to share a little information about how a breast check-up is performed.
To begin you must stand in front of a mirror to observe the external state of your breasts. Make sure their size, shape and color are normal.
Later you must raise your arm and put your hand behind your head. With the pads of two of your fingers, touch firmly around the breast in a circular fashion, looking for a lump. You can also do this from the armpit, turning the breast until you reach the nipple.
You must repeat these steps on both breasts and also lying on your back. Finally, look at the nipples, check if they come out of yellowish, milky, transparent liquid or blood. In case you are breastfeeding, it is normal for milk to come out of it. You can see different online explanations about the complete process with visual help, to get a better reference.
Don’t be afraid to explore your own body!

Although it is recommended that you get a checkup every month, it is also important that you know that it is not the only method to detect cancer. Breast ultrasound and mammography are other alternatives that can better detect abnormalities or cysts in the breasts.
