What are the effects of endometriosis on fertility? Endometriosis is a gynecological condition that affects millions of women worldwide and is one of the leading causes of female infertility. This condition occurs when endometrial-like tissue, which normally lines the inside of the uterus, grows outside of it, affecting organs such as the ovaries, fallopian tubes, and other areas of the pelvis.

In addition to intense pain and other uncomfortable symptoms, endometriosis can make conception difficult and impact the quality of life of women who wish to become mothers.

At Advanced Fertility Center Cancun, we want our patients to always be informed.

What is endometriosis, and how does it affect women?

Endometriosis is a chronic inflammatory disease in which endometrial-like tissue grows outside the uterus. This tissue responds to hormonal fluctuations of the menstrual cycle, meaning it thickens, breaks down, and bleeds with each cycle. However, unlike normal endometrial tissue, which is shed during menstruation, this misplaced tissue has no way to exit, causing inflammation and adhesions in affected organs.

What are some symptoms of endometriosis?
    • Pelvic pain, especially during menstruation.
    • Pain during sexual intercourse.
    • Heavy or irregular menstrual bleeding.
    • Digestive problems such as bloating and stomach discomfort.
    • Chronic fatigue.
    • Difficulty getting pregnant.

Although some women with this condition can conceive without issues, many experience infertility due to the effects this disease has on the reproductive system.

    How does it affect fertility?

    Blockage of the fallopian tubes.
When endometrial tissue grows in the fallopian tubes, it can cause inflammation and scarring, blocking the passage of the egg from the ovaries to the uterus. This prevents the sperm and egg from meeting, reducing the chances of fertilization.

    • Ovulation disorders.

Endometriosis can affect ovarian function, reducing the quantity and quality of eggs. In some cases, ovarian cysts filled with endometrial tissue can interfere with egg maturation and lower ovarian reserve.

    • Inflammation and a hostile environment for fertilization.

Chronic inflammation caused by endometriosis can create a hostile environment in the reproductive system, affecting egg quality and the sperm’s ability to fertilize it.

    • Problems with embryo implantation.

Endometriosis can also affect the uterine lining, making it difficult for an embryo to implant and increasing the risk of miscarriage.

    • Hormonal imbalances.

Some women with endometriosis experience hormonal imbalances that can affect ovulation and reduce the chances of pregnancy.

What can be done if a woman with endometriosis wants to have a baby?

In Vitro Fertilization or Intrauterine Insemination may be good options for assisted reproduction treatments for women with endometriosis.

It is important to mention that it is necessary to consult a fertility specialist for a proper diagnosis and personalized recommendation.
