los mitos y las verdades de los preservativos

Today we want to share some information about the myths and facts about condoms. Condoms are one of the most widely used contraceptive methods worldwide. They not only prevent unplanned pregnancies but also serve as one of the most effective barriers against sexually transmitted infections (STIs). However, despite their effectiveness and accessibility, many myths persist about their use, leading to misinformation and affecting people’s sexual health.

At Advanced Fertility Center Cancun, we want to keep you informed about condoms and their role in sexual health.
Here are some common myths and the facts behind them.

    • Myth: Using Two Condoms at the Same Time Offers Greater Protection

Fact: Using two condoms simultaneously can actually be counterproductive. The friction between them can cause them to break more easily, increasing the risk of pregnancy or STI transmission. A single high-quality, properly placed condom is enough to provide safe protection.

    • Myth: Condoms Are 100% Effective

Fact: While condoms are highly effective, they do not offer 100% protection. Their effectiveness in preventing pregnancy is approximately 98% with perfect use, but in real-life scenarios—where errors in placement or integrity failures can occur—the effectiveness rate is 85-90%. For greater security, it’s recommended to combine condoms with another contraceptive method, such as birth control pills.

    • Myth: Condoms Are Only for Preventing Pregnancy

Fact: In addition to being an effective contraceptive method, condoms play a crucial role in preventing sexually transmitted infections such as HIV, gonorrhea, syphilis, and chlamydia. They are the only contraceptive method that protects against STIs, making them a recommended option even for stable couples who have not recently undergone medical testing.

    • Myth: Condoms Break Easily

Fact: Condoms undergo rigorous quality testing to ensure their strength and durability. If stored properly (in a cool, dry place, away from sharp objects and extreme heat) and used correctly, the risk of breakage is minimal. Always check the expiration date and open the package carefully to prevent damage.

    • Myth: Condoms Are Not Necessary for Oral Sex

Fact: Although the risk of STI transmission through oral sex is lower than through vaginal or anal sex, there is still a possibility of contracting infections such as herpes, HPV, and gonorrhea. There are condoms specifically designed for oral sex, providing a safer and more comfortable option.

    • Myth: Condoms Are Uncomfortable and Difficult to Use

Fact: With practice and knowledge, using condoms becomes easy and natural. Additionally, there are different sizes and types of condoms to suit each person’s needs. Choosing the right size is essential to ensure both comfort and safety.

Using condoms is one of the most effective ways to protect sexual health, but myths and misinformation can create doubts and resistance toward their use. Understanding the truth about condoms is crucial for making informed and responsible decisions.

Using them correctly and combining them with other healthy sexual practices, such as regular medical check-ups and open communication with your partner, contributes to a safe and satisfying sexual life.

At Advanced Fertility Center Cancun, our team of specialists is here to provide you with the professional and compassionate care you deserve.
