During pregnancy it is essential that you carry out a series of studies to verify that you and the baby are well.  The purpose of these studies is to monitor your health and give you peace of mind throughout your pregnancy. Next we will explain a little more in depth about what are prenatal studies and their purpose.

While you are pregnant, the doctors will tell you that from time to time you should carry out different studies to monitor your health and the growth of the baby. The studies help detect conditions that can put your pregnancy at risk.

These are some of the studies that prenatal’s typically include:

Blood chemistry

This test is for blood, and it evaluates different elements.  They can be performed from 3 to 45 elements, depending on what conditions need to be located.  Some of these elements are: cholesterol level, uric acid, glucose level, urea, creatinine, among others.

Pap smear

This study is recommended to be carried out from the time a woman reaches the age of 18, as its purpose is to detect precancerous lesions in the uterus.  Usually women are recommended to have a Pap smear prenatally, to rule out the possibility of developing cervical cancer.

Blood group and RH

Although having a negative blood type is not negative for your health, it can be a disadvantage for your pregnancy if your baby is RH positive.  This incompatibility does not usually represent a risk in the first pregnancy, however complications may occur in the second if it is RH positive.  Babies inherit the RH factor from either parent.

We invite you to read our entry: What prenatal studies do you need?

TORCH

The TORCH profile is initialized by studies in English: toxoplasmosis, rubella, cytomegalovirus, herpes simplex, HIV.  This study is necessary since mothers can transmit different infections or diseases to babies during pregnancy.

Now that we have talked a bit about what are prenatal studies. What other topic would you like us to talk about on our blog?
