Análisis de semen

Semen analysis, also known as sperm count; is one of the most common fertility tests that help determine if a man has a fertility problem that prevents him from having a baby.

A question that can arise to anyone is when to do fertility tests?  If you have had sex for more than a year and have not gotten a pregnancy, it is time to perform them.

In the case of men, before performing the test, sexual activity should be avoided, considering a time of 2 to 5 days before giving the sample, this allows the sperm count to be higher.

Semen analysis is performed as follows:

favicon Give a semen sample.  The most common way is to go to a clinical laboratory and masturbate in a private place, such as the bathroom; the sample must be delivered in a sterile container and no lubricant should be used.

In fertility clinics they usually have a space indicated to perform this procedure, so that you feel comfortable.

favicon Examine the sample in a laboratory. A laboratory technician should examine sperm under a microscope so you can evaluate different aspects of sperm, such as:

  • Volume: The amount of semen that is produced.
  • Sperm count: The number of sperm per milliliter.
  • Sperm motility: Normal movement must be forward.
  • Sperm morphology: The shape each one has.

The normal values of this analysis should be with a volume between 1.5 to 5.0 milliliters per ejaculation, a sperm count between 20 to 150 million per milliliter and at least 60% of the sperm must have a normal shape and movement.

If the results show a low sperm count or a movement and shape is a sign of male infertility.  However, it is common for two or more additional samples to be requested one or two weeks after the first one; this is because the quantity and quality of semen varies from one day to another.

This type of analysis can also be used to determine if a vasectomy has had the expected result; that is, the presence of sperm is not detected.

At Advanced Fertility Center Cancun we have an andrology and clinical analysis laboratory and we guarantee you to be the best place to carry out your semen analysis.  Our specialists will recommend the most appropriate treatment to improve your fertility.
